Installing the Java Contactor
Run the install.sh script and specify the install location which
will create an executable shell script at the install location
called JavaContactor.sh. Assuming that Java version 1.4.2 or later
is installed and your PATH includes java, then executing the JavaContactor.sh
script will start the Java Contactor.

NOTE: Do not specify the current directory as the install path for the
Java Contactor when using the install script, always use a full path.
For example /usr/local/bin is great ./bin will not work.

- What version of Java do I need?
Java version 1.3.1 or higher is necessary to run the Java Contactor
version. In order for the launchers to work, it is necessary that
the Java virtual machine is on the Path environment variable.

- I got a 30-day license when I started the first time, but then when
I launch again it says I have 0 days left. Why is this?
When you unzipped the Java Contactor you might have moved it to
another folder such as the /Applications folder. The Java Contactor
needs the "database" folder as well as the application, so make sure
to copy over the database folder to where the Java Contactor
application is.

- My Java Contactor doesn't launch at all. What do I do?
If the Java Contactor doesn't launch, then it is most likely because
Java is either not installed, or the Java executable is not available
to the host operating system. Make sure that java is installed on your
system and is on the system path. Try opening a command window or a
shell window and typing "java -version" If java responds that you are
running Java version 1.3.1 or higher then java is installed. If not,
then download and install a java virtual machine from Sun at the
http://java.sun.com website.

- I'm trying to send email and receive an error message that begins
with "Unknown host:" Why is this?
Make sure that you are connected to the Internet and are able to send
email, perhaps by sending a test email with your regular email reader.
Then make sure you have entered the correct email host name and
selected the options for sending email correctly. If your email
provider requires SMTP authorization for sending email, then make sure
to check the "Use SMTP auth" checkbox in the Java Contactor
preferences and enter the appropriate user name and password.

- I am trying to send email and it fails with an error message that
begins with the words "Bad IO connection:" This happens 'before' I send
any email.
The Java Contactor version 1.4 and earlier always used the outbound
port 5432 to send email. If you upgrade to version 1.5 (a free
update) the Java Contactor will look for available outbound ports to
send mail from. If you don't wish to upgrade then make sure that your
firewall software allows you to send mail through outbound port 5432.

- I am trying to send email and it fails with an error message that
begins with the words "Bad IO connection:" This happens 'after' I send
the first batch of email.
The Java Contactor version 1.4 and earlier always used the outbound
port 5432 to send email. If you set the "Batch email delay (seconds)"
too short, then the outbound port 5432 might still be in use when the
next batch is set to go out because it takes some time to close down
Sockets and release the ports so that they can be reused. Upgrade to
version 1.5 of the Java Contactor or higher. The newer versions will
search for any available outbound port instead of only looking at port
5432. If you don't wish to upgrade, then setting the batch email
delay to 300 seconds (5 minutes) or more should work depending on your
system configuration. You can increase or decrease that time as
necessary.

- I sent only a portion of the total emails. How do I continue where
I left off?
The Java Contactor sends email in phonebook order, the same order that
contacts are displayed in the application. The contacts that have
already been emailed to are listed in the SMTPmailer.log after the heading
"Sent emails to these email addresses." Take note of the last email
address sent to on this list. Then email to the group again and
deselect all the email addresses above that listing in the email
wizard.
